CELEBRATING ALL THE WOMEN IT TOOK TO GET US HERE

Mission

THE DOWRY IS A FEMALE OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS WITH A COMMITMENT TO EMPOWERING WOMEN AND YOUNG GIRLS ABUSED BY TRADITIONAL DOWRY PRACTICES.

These are just a few women who fought for the vote. Historically women received limited education and were only allowed a few options for work and hobby. The short list included vocations like midwife, teacher, dressmaker and nurse. They weren't allowed to vote or hold public office. Trailblazing women in the 18th and 19th centuries started the momentum that resulted in granting women the right to vote in 1920. And haven’t we come a long way since then? In January 2021, we witnessed the swearing-in of our first-ever female Vice President, Kamala Harris!

We have been actively celebrating women's’ contributions in history since 1987 when Congress passed a public law designating the month of March as Women’s History Month. The women’s suffrage centennial celebrations were curtailed in 2020, but The National Women’s History Alliance extended the annual theme for 2021:

Valiant Women of The Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.

We are filled with gratitude as we acknowledge everything that HAD to happen historically in order for The Dowry {among many other American businesses}, to have the privilege to work with so many driven, educated, innovative and talented women today.

Their calloused hands are weaving threads, forming clay, forging steel, shaping wood, and architecting new designs and techniques that will enrich our lives for generations. These women, too, refuse to be silenced as they work to maintain thriving small businesses across the country.
